US mid-term elections: EPP President congratulates Republican party, announces visit to Washington DC

The President of the European People's Party (EPP) Wilfried Martens congratulated today the Republican party for its victory in the US mid-term elections and announced the visit of the EPP to Washington DC in December to strengthen transatlantic relations:

"I congratulate the Republican party for winning yesterday's mid-term elections. With the continuation of the global economic and financial crisis, the political dynamics in the US are continuing to evolve in a dramatic way and, among others, underline the importance of strengthening the transatlantic partnership," stated the EPP President.

"Now, more than ever, it is high time to tackle together the mounting global challenges. Europe and America share the same fundamental values and, therefore, have an interest in finding common solutions to global challenges. That's why I decided to lead a high level EPP delegation to Washington DC in December and to meet with leading decision-makers in the administration and in Congress, and with opinion-makers in the think-tank world," Wilfried Martens added.

Note to editors:

The EPP is the largest and most influential European-level political party of the centre-right, which currently includes 73 member-parties from 39 countries, the Presidents of the Commission, Council, and Parliament, 14 EU and 6 non-EU heads of state and government, 13 members of the European Commission and the largest Group in the European Parliament.
