Defense Authorization Debated in House Armed Services Committee
Markup of FY2012 Authorization Act

Washington, DC

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

he House Armed Services Committee is holding a markup meeting to complete work on the FY2012 Defense Authorization bill.

Fulfilling his promise of transparency, Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA) released the National Defense Authorization Act on Monday, two days before today's markup. While there are some differences in individual funding lines, McKeon essentially supports the Pentagon's request for budget changes.

The bill is expected to be critically reviewed and amended by both Republican and Democrat members.

After the Committee passes the bill, it will then go on to the House floor for debate and final passage. Though an exact schedule is not known, the House is expected to finish consideration of the bill later this month or in early June. Following the lower chamber, the Senate will then take up the legislation, possibly in late summer and a final bill is expected to be sent to the President’s desk for his signature by the fall.
