SUBCOMMITTEE HEARING TO REVIEW FY 2013 COAST GUARD AND MARITIME TRANSPORTATION BUDGET REQUEST
SUBCOMMITTEE HEARING TO REVIEW FY 2013 COAST GUARD AND MARITIME TRANSPORTATION BUDGET REQUEST
March 6, 2012
Washington, DC – The Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, chaired by U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), will hold a hearing on Wednesday to examine the fiscal year (FY) 2013 budget requests for the United States Coast Guard, Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), and Maritime Administration (MARAD).
The President requests $9.96 billion in FY 2013 for Coast Guard activities, nearly 6 percent less than the FY 2012 enacted level. The FY 2013 request proposes to cut the size of the Coast Guard’s workforce by 1,071 positions, including a reduction of 1,008 servicemembers and 63 civilians, close facilities, and decommission assets. The budget request also proposes to cut the funding for the Service’s acquisition of new assets and technology by 18 percent below current levels, and terminate or delay certain acquisition programs.
The budget request for the FMC is $26 million, an eight percent increase over the FY 2012 enacted level. Most of this increase is attributable to the expansion of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Dispute Resolution Services and is intended to meet an increase in the number of parties seeking alternative dispute resolution.
Additionally, the President requests $344 million in FY 2013 for the activities of MARAD, a reduction of 1.6 percent below the FY 2012 enacted level.
On Wednesday, the panel will focus on protecting Coast Guard and maritime jobs in today’s fiscal environment.
