Lockheed Martin Corp.’s latest version of a ship-based missile defense system has been certified by the Navy for deployment, according to a company announcement.
The updated Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system provides two layers of active missile defense and surveillance for shipss to defend against short-to-intermediate range ballistic missiles.
The new system includes a signal processor, which uses open architecture standards for integrating commercial-off-the-shelf technology onto ships.
The Bethesda, Md.-based company said the Navy’s USS Shiloh, based in Japan, will be the first vessel to receive the 4.0.1 upgrade.
Last month, the Navy awarded the company a $20 million contract to integrate, install and test Aegis systems for combat ships.
